The silent environments created by Carlos Arturo Guerra for his contemporary interpretations of the traditional bodegón offer a glimpse into a comfortable domestic interior decorated with fine furnishings and lovely floral arrangements. The ordinary objects typical of modern bodegón still lifes are selected not only for the unique shapes and textures that become demonstrations of an artist’s paintery skills, but because of the ambience they represent as well. His interiors are enhanced by the objects, flowers, fabrics, and books displayed on wooden tables. They indicate a level of success and intelligence, an admirable quality of life, and an appreciation for beautiful things.
The table arrangements are carefully composed and the objects selected exhibit a desire on the part of the artist to balance shapes, patterns, and colors for tranquil pictorial effects. Often there is a window open to a beautiful landscape that allows natural light to illuminate the arrangements and cast soft and lovely shadows. When figures are incorporated into these scenes, they are also quiet and contemplative, and treated as a compositional as well as narrative device.
